Adding the second dimension with cadmium : two-dimensional sheets assembled from cadmium(II) and 4 '-phenyl-4,2 ':6 ',4 ''-terpyridine and locked by pi-stacked interactions
4'-Phenyl-4,2':6',4 ''-terpyridine (3) reacts with Cd(NO3)(2)center dot 4H(2)O in MeOH-CHCl3 to produce [Cd(3)(2)(ONO2)(2)center dot MeOH center dot CHCl3](n) in high yield; two sets of undulating chains built up from trans-related ligands result in the formation of two-dimensional sheets, locked together by efficient pi-stacking involving the phenyl substituents.
