Abstract |
Metropolitan areas have a key role in the world-wide process of urbanisation and are also global risk areas due to demographic, social, political, economic and ecological processes, and poorly coordinated administration and planning. Because of the high proportion of slum dwellers among the urban population, the problems of urban poverty areas deserve special attention. The objectives of this research partnership are to contribute to improving living conditions in urban poverty areas, minimizing and preventing risks (pertaining to the poor supply of sanitary housing and related health risks), giving the most vulnerable/slum dwellers a voice in the issues of slum upgrading and identifying factors that assist in moving people out of urban poverty.
