Abstract An abbreviated version of the Goldberg Anorectic Attitude Scale (GAAS) consisting of seven subscales was analyzed with the aid of a sample of 23 adolescent anorexic patients with early onset of the disease. Intercorrelations indicated that the individual scales were sufficiently independent. A test of convergent validity resulted in substantial correlations of some scales of the GAAS with other scales measuring anorexic behaviour and symptoms. Clinical characteristics of the anorexic syndrome and a number of the background variables had no effect on GAAS scores. The validity of the subscale measuring denial of illness is questionable. On the other hand, there is some indication of clinical utility of the GAAS since it adequately reflects change due to inpatient treatment.
