Abstract

Public health research in Switzerland has continuously gained importance for the scientific community as well as for the society. Swiss public health researchers are making significant contributions to the field offering an enabling environment for young researchers. The SSPH+ PhD Program Public Health is a continuation of the ProDoc Training Module (PDAM33-119477) which started in 2008. At its start 25 students were registered with the program. In 2010 this number increased to 64. Although the areas of research differ among PhD fellows, their training needs overlap: core competences such as general research skills and knowledge of advanced methods in epidemiology/public health are shared by the students. As the individual universities lack the critical mass of students and supervisors in public health to organize individual PhD training programs, a coordinated inter-university PhD program is highly efficient and provides high level teaching and networking opportunities. The Program developed minimal standards for PhD training and supervision which have been implemented as binding standards at the end of 2010. Through a forward looking approach to re-conceptualize the role of doctoral supervision and a stimulating research environment, the program aims at providing the students with the best possible preparations for a career in research or in applied fields.
