Abstract

Poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon and constitutes one of the core problems of non-sustainable development in Pakistan. It is spatially concentrated in marginal areas with unfavourable bio-physical conditions and socio-economic deprivation. Inhomogeneous patterns of human welfare over space reflect the aspects of development disparities. Spatially defined and disaggregated information on poverty and related aspects is crucial for cognitive, analytical and monitoring purposes and provides a platform for a better understanding of the linkages and interdependencies between different factors. The overarching hypothesis of this project is that Geographical Information System (GIS)-based spatial poverty analysis has great potential to identify and analyse the multi dimensions of poverty and this potential is very valuable to contribute to mitigation research. The main goal of this project is to describe the spatial dimensions of poverty and inequality and to explore the underlying correlates and determinants. A methodological framework will be developed for applying advanced GIS-techniques to generate new assessment approaches for development of well-informed pro-poor policies in Pakistan.
