Abstract

Major psychopathological conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety disorders are common and cause large emotional and economic burdens to patients, relatives, caregivers, and to the community. These conditions are etiologically complex. However, high heritability estimates suggest that naturally occurring genetic variations contribute significantly to etiology and course of disease.

We will perform a comprehensive, high-throughput genetic study in the entire cohort of the SESAM project to identify genetic factors influencing disease risk and disease course. The unique trans-generational and longitudinal nature of SESAM will allow the detailed assessment of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions by taking into consideration time-sensitive and family-based environmental factors.

The reliable identification of the risk-modifying and course-modifying genetic factors will contribute to our increased knowledge about the neural mechanisms of psychopathology and will thereby provide a rational basis for the design of effective therapies.
