Abstract

"Thinking Jewish Modernity" will offer original contemporary portraits of 45 thinkers who found, formed, and transformed the twentieth- and twentieth-first century world. This project is under direction of Jacques Picard (Basel), Jacques Revel (IHESS Paris), Michael Steinberg (Brown, Providence) and Idith Zertal (Tel Aviv).  In mid-2016, the volume has been published: Jacques Picard et.al. (eds): Makers of Jewish Modernity. Thinkers, Artists, Leaders, and the World They Made. Princeton / Oxford (Princeton University Press) 2016.

The portraits that are presented understands intellectual, political and cultural biografies in the context of lifeworlds of their protagonists, in other words, in terms of texts and contexts, space and time, thoughts and actions, inheritance and transformation. Traditions in transitions and search for future creations and new dimensions are part of the spectrum and tensions, like that of the relation between Jewish and non-Jewish worlds. They are often contested and, too, indeed violoent, but remain porous, inspiring and fluid as well. The thinkers to be engaged, and the scholars who write about them, share an understanding of modernity as both an objective and subjective condition that has its impacts on both world and self in which knowledge and transformation of either or both remain essential but elusive human conditions.
