Abstract |
In view of global Christianity one may identify an emergency of Pentecostal intervention in political domains. This more recent development within global Pentecostalism is rooted in a surprisingly coherent theological design termed dominion theology. Here, dominion theology is defined as pneumatic theo-praxis primarily found within the wider networks of megachurches. Pneumatic theo-praxis claims visionary plausibility seeking to intervene in socio-political dynamics now. Besides its eschatological imprint it is characterized by an agonistic habitus, transferred within networks by a politics of anointing. By referring to recent presidential elections in Ghana, West Africa, the constructive rather than destructive effects of pneumatic theo-praxis are highlighted. In postcolonial state formation, thus, pentecostal dominion theology helps to expand spaces for civil society. In certain contexts, the exploration of religion and politics in Africa needs to be redirected from a focus on institutionalized politics to a discourse on public spheres, by involving megachurch pneumatic theo-political agency. |
