Abstract |
Arabic biographical dictionaries are the richest and most important source for information on the histories of not only male individuals and scholars, but also of women. They have engendered many studies but we hardly ever find comprehensive studies on female biographies included therein. Therefore the focus of this study is on the manyfold female biographies in the Taʾrīkh madīnat Dimashq by the Damascene scholar Ibn ʿAsākir (499-571H). He describes 226 female individuals who resided in, or passed through Syria or her capital since the 1st century until his lifetime. The paper aims to provide insights into Ibn ʿAsākir’s criteria for selecting these biographies. These selection criteria of the included women reflect not only the social background of the biographer but also his personal interests and his ideological orientations. |
