The global aging population raises a key social concern in the adequacy for healthcare and family systems to effectively support older persons’ wishes to age-in-place. With the advancement of smart home technologies to promote the independent living of older persons, there has been an array of various ethical and scientific investigations into their efficacy and challenges. These technologies involved in creating a smart home environment for older individuals are greatly anticipated to ease caregiving burdens for both informal and formal caregivers. However, while conducting a systematic review of the literature, the authors discovered a lack of empirical data on perceptions and attitudes of immigrant adult children providing caregiving at a distance for their elderly parents. The aim of this sub-project is to explore the potential opportunities and barriers of smart home technologies to ameliorate this population’s caregiving burdens, as adult immigrant children may not able to provide in-person care for their parents while living at a great distance and across international borders.
