Abstract Our research agenda relies on a theory-based empirical approach to investigate the interplay between natural and spatial population movements and economic development during Western Europe’s industrialization. We pin down the role of alternative mechanisms during the transition to modernity, using advanced calibration techniques based on dynamic general equilibrium models.
