Abstract

This study is predicated on a dual-premise; first, that leading to the late nineteenth century, Basel Mission (hereafter, BM) designs for planning Abokobi’s built space prioritised claiming the mission land(scape), yet, shared striking similarities with existing indigenous Gã modes of socio-spatial organisation according to the patrilineal households (weku shiãi, sn. weku shiã) and town quarter (akutsei, sn. akutso) pattern. Secondly, that since the late nineteenth century, new built forms were explored by an emerging Gã middle-class as a medium of projecting and re-defining Gã-Christian ‘modernity’ via architecture by negotiating or sometimes even contesting missionary/church domination of Abokobi’s built space. Based on a critical reading of material culture, visual, archival and oral testimonies, architectural and urban spaces are explored to demonstrate how Abokobi converts re-adjusted their indigenous spatial practices and cosmological notions to the new Christian enclave as revealed in the re-configuration and use of domestic household spaces.
