Abstract
As in many other, if not all, times and cultures, the phenomenon of making contrafacts also occurs in medieval German songs. The article tries to give an overview of the occurrence of contrafacts in German literature of the Middel Ages and of the philological and transmission-related difficulties to determine them. Three examples (Walther von der Vogelweide, Heinrich Laufenberg, Frauenlob) show that the multiple use of a melody was anything but self-evident, common or semantically arbitrary.
