Abstract

We empirically investigate the determinants of democracy by estimating dynamic panel data models. We find a strong neighbor effect, which means that the geographic region matters for the evolution of democratic rights and freedoms in developing countries. Foreign aid has a stabilizing effect on democracy, but does not induce democratization processes in countries that lack a basis of democratic institutions. Controlling for the neighbor and aid effects, neither income nor openness to trade matter.
