Abstract

The pervasive nature of structural racism in the healthcare and research domains has been widely studied, in particular in the United States, where its effects have contributed to the widening of health inequities along racial and ethnic lines. However, investigating the impact of structural racism in the Swiss context has not benefitted from the same impetus, and its effects on the health of minorities remain largely unknown. Given the paradigm shift occuring in the Swiss healthcare system, where precision medicine is increasingly being implemented (e.g. tailoring interventions based on cellular or molecular characteristics of tumours, a field known as precision oncology), it is crucial to understand whether all racial and ethnic groups in Switzerland will eventually reap the same benefits from advances made in healthcare. Indeed, structural racism has the potential to exacerbate already-existing health inequities between racial and ethnic groups, especially in innovative and technology-driven fields such as precision oncology. Therefore, the STRIPE project aims to investigate the presence and potential impact of structural racism in Swiss precision oncology initiatives, and subsequently provide actionable insights to ensure that such initiatives abide to their health equity and social justice goals.
