Abstract

The Commission pour la sécurité des patients et la qualité des soins (CSPQS) of the canton Valais wished to perform a feasibility study about putting into practice the measurement of patient-reported outcomes. For this purpose, three steps were taken:

- a review of reviews concerning the use of PROMs, assessing the levels on which they are used, different types of PROMS, the themes covered by PROMs, the clinical context in which they are used, a selection of instruments to measure PROMs, consequences of their measurement, how they are put into practice and what criteria well-developped PROMs need to fulfill. This literature review was performed based on a search in Pubmed and grey literature between November 2019 and January 2020.

- Interviews in different countries and contexts with experts that have experience in the use of PROMs to learn about barriers and facilitators in their implementation. We performed 5 semi-structured interviews with experts from Switzerland, Wales and the US for the hospital, community and nursing home setting.

- assess posibilities in the canton Valais to introduce PROMs and provide three project drafts for an implementation in three different contexts. Based on a workshop with interested parties and further conversations, we developed three pilot projects in the setting of hospitals and rehabilitation.
