Abstract This paper analyzes the representation in the Spanish press of Equatoguineans living in Spain. So far, the Equatoguineans are not part of any discursive or sociolinguistic study about migration and language contacts in the Spanish-speaking world. In the 1970s, the Spanish press contributed actively to the general lack of knowledge about Equatorial Guinea in Spain, when everything related to that country was declared classified material through the Law of Official Secrets ( Ley de Secretos Oficiales ). Until today, no studies exist about the reappearance of Equatorial Guinea in the Spanish newspapers from 1976 onwards, nor do we know how the Equatoguineans in Spain are represented in the contemporary Spanish media. In this paper we will discuss a selection of articles, published between 2010 and 2018 in the digital versions of El País and La Vanguardia . We will analyze the image that these newspapers create and spread, and think about the following questions: Do the Equatoguineans appear frequently in the Spanish press? Do they have a personalized profile or do they disappear behind generalizing terminology such as Africans , Sub-Saharans or foreigners ? What topics are predominant in articles about Equatoguineans? How does the press influence their (in)visibility in the Spanish society?
