On the distribution and autoecology of Trechus fulvus Dejean, 1831 (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechinae) in the Iberian Península

Abstract
The authors have compiled all the Iberian records of Trechus fulvus Dejean, 1831 from 1865 to 2015, corresponding to 134 bibliographical references and to 86 UTM grid 10 x 10 km squares. Additionally, 103 new records are included, resulting from sampling conducted in the last year, corresponding to 84 new UTM 10 x 10 km squares. All these records are shown on a distribution map. A second map shows the environment where the specimens were captured (epigean vs. hypogean) to test whether hypogean behaviour is correlated with a latitudinal gradient. A further two maps combine the distribution of the species and some environmental information (average annual rainfall and biogeographical provinces and regions) and so reveal that the distribution of T. fulvus in the Iberian Peninsula notably corresponds to annual average precipitations over 600 mm, except for the Pyrenean biogeographical province. Thus, this species is absent in most of the Mediterranean biogeographical provinces. The first records of T. fulvus in the Alluvial Mesovoid Shallow Substratum are also provided. It is hypothesized that this environment may serve as a subterranean corridor, promoting the dispersal of non-winged individuals. These data also allow to study the cycle of annual activity of the imagoes, revealing a maximum activity in spring and autumn, similar to most edaphic and epigean species, in spite of the hypogean origin of the sampled individuals.
