Abstract

In Denmark, as in all EU member states, the control process of various financial support schemes for farmers and specifically the EU single payment scheme is to a large extent based on satellite imagery and orthofotos and hence referred to as Control with Remote Sensing (CwRS). Despite the general technological advances in data acquisition and processing, the CwRS still is characterized by manual GIS operations, which represent a substantial bottleneck and source of uncertainty in the administrative process. Hence there is an increasing interest in developing automated methods for spatial data analysis that facilitate CwRS. The REMOTE CONTROL project aims to devise and test prototype tools that automatically can extract and label objects or features in landscapes that are relevant for the CwRS. This is achieved by an integrated research and development approach, which will primarily be based on a combination of image and terrain analysis. The remote sensing data utilized by the project comprise high-resolution orthofotos, VHR satellite imagery and, as a new source of remote sensing data, airborne light detection and ranging (lidar)-derived digital terrain models.
