Abstract
This paper is part of a project to write a comprehensive commentary of Arno Schmidts "Abend mit Goldrand". It presents a critical reading of the chapters 48 and 49 of this book. Against the background of the famous "Haywain Triptych" by Hieronymus Bosch, I show how the aspects of a rural idyll are destructed in drastic and violent images, thereby further reinforcing the negativistic attitude against creation which is displayed throughout the text.
