Abstract This chapter begins with an overview of Claude E. Shannon and Warren Weaver's informaton theory, with a particular focus on their reflections on noise as the least intelligible but maximally informative signal. It then outlines the contributions of various literary, cultural, and media theorists that build on Shannon's work, including Jacques Attali, Michel Serres, William R. Paulson, N. Katherine Hayles, Niklas Luhmann, Friedrich A. Kittler, and Philipp Schweighauser. The chapter ends with a discussion of Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 in the light of information and systems theory.
