Abstract
Die Erforschung von Textilien und des Textilen fokussiert auf eine der grundlegenden Kulturtechniken der Antike. Im Zentrum des Bandes stehen für ein Mal nicht so sehr die symbolischen Zuschreibungen, die mit dem Weben assoziiert werden, und nicht die sozialen Bindungen, die mittels Weben artikuliert werden. Es geht in eine andere Richtung. Den Ausgangspunkt bildet das voraussetzungsreiche Wissen, das dem Weben zugrunde liegt, wodurch die Bewertung von Webarbeit neu zu interpretieren ist. Zudem gilt es, die üblich gewordene Analogie zwischen Webarbeit und Textproduktion zu prüfen und auch entscheidende Differenzen zwischen diesen Tätigkeiten zu identifizieren. Dass mit dem Weben berühmte Narrative der antiken Literatur assoziiert werden, ist gut dokumentiert und wird nicht in Abrede gestellt. Hier sollen ergänzend auch andere, bislang nicht diskutierte Texte zu Wort kommen, in denen unter anderem ein Diskurs über Wollqualitäten läuft, oder aber die Sorge um das sachgemässe Aufbewahren von Textilien im Vordergrund steht. Der herausragenden Bedeutung des Webens und des Textilen in der Antike trägt der vorliegende Band „Texte und Textilien“ Rechnung, der aus einer interdisziplinären Tagung hervorging und neue Anstösse zu dieser wichtigen Forschungsrichtung liefern will. The research of textiles and fabric focuses on one of the fundamental cultural arts. However, this volume, for once, centers not solely on the symbolic attribution often associated with weaving, nor on the social connections articulated using weaving as a medium. It branches off in another direction. The knowledge rich art of weaving marks the starting point through which to newly assess and interpret woven work. Additionally it is imperative to reconsider the customary analogy between weaving and textual production and to identify the differences between these pursuits as well. That weaving is associated with famous narratives of ancient literature is well documented and will not be denied. Here we will deal with other supplementary texts not yet discussed, which contain—among other things—a discourse about the quality of wool or in which the appropriate storing of textiles comes to the fore. The present volume, the result of an interdisciplinary conference, addresses the crucial meaning of weaving and textiles in the ancient world and aims to provide novel contributions to this important area of research.
