Abstract

A study conducted in 2009 in Côte d’Ivoire showed that food insecurity affects 12.6% of the population in rural areas. 2.5% of population from this group is affected by severe foods insecurity (CIN, 2014). In the department of Bongouanou area, in the Centre East in Côte d’Ivoire, food insecurity rate was estimated at about 53 % in 2012 (ENV 2012). The induced mortality rate was estimated at 7 % per year. Food insecurity seems to be due to the limited availability of food, but even more so to people's food choices and selections. This is the intellectual starting point of this ESKAS funded PhD research. Eating food is a biological need but it is also a social act. The meanings of eating are multiple and created at the intersections of biological, emotional, cultural, and social life. Moreover, food choices, selections and eating practices are often closely linked with constructions of personal and collective identity. The PhD project thus aims at exploring: How do eating practices shape food selection in Bongouanou communities? Are food practices linked with identity construction, and if yes, in what ways?
