The Center for Gender Studies and the NCCR Molecular Systems Engineering are cooperation partners in a project on Gender & Science. The project aims at developing tools to support young female researchers in their career and designing gender and diversity trainings for project leaders.
The project focuses on the following central questions:
- How is research and support of young researchers organized and structured in the NCCR and what role do gender and diversity play in these practices?
- What tools and instruments would be helpful to increase equal opportunities in the NCCR and to support female researchers in their career?
Following Londa Schiebinger (2011), the project will be organized along three distinct levels of analysis with a clear focus on the first and second dimension:
- Participation of Women in Science
- Relevance of Gender in the Culture of Science
- Relevance of Gender in the Results of Science
The research design consists of 3 steps:
June 18 - May 19: Exploratory Research
- Field entry, Participant Observation

June 19 - May 20: Qualitative Interview Study
- Semi-structured Interviews, further Participant Observation

Throughout the whole project, there will be an ongoing documentation of the findings to raise awareness for the topic and to encourage the discussion about gendered patterns of everyday work life in the NCCR MSE. Furthermore, the project aims at public communication of the results.
