Abstract

The controversial correlation between religion and development has recently been transformed into more constructive approaches. Secular development agencies and institutions such as the World Bank began to explore religious factors in development dynamics. By consequence, religious actors have been slowly and somehow reluctantly identified as stakeholders in social change. This project seeks to explore the role of religious NGOs in development work in the global South. Despite much topical interest and a growing literature on ‘religion and development’, there is relatively little grounded empirical analysis of whether religious NGOs do in fact act differently from secular NGOs. The research project therefore seeks to explore the particularity of religious NGOs. It is also interested in multi-religious comparisons of development concepts and practices. Empirical case-studies are covering faith-based organizations in diverse African, Carribean, East Asian contexts or deal with their global development policies. The members of this research project are of an international and interdisciplinary background.
