Abstract |
Autism is a highly heterogeneous disorder with unknown etiology. Genetic risk factors are considered to be a major component. We hypothesize, that diverse autism-associated mutations result in a disruption of a small set of core pathways that are ultimately responsible for altered neuronal function. Moreover, we hypothesize that these alterations in neuronal function precipitate during a critical developmental window the abnormal development of specific neuronal circuits. Thus, definition of the critical developmental window and targeted interventions to restore normal neuronal function during this time should provide a promising approach towards therapeutic intervention. |
