Abstract Background: The number of children born with very low birth weight has increased during the last 3 decades, while survival rates have increased due to improved neonatal management. However, prematurely born children are at increased risk for poor cognitive function and socio-emotional problems. Cognitive deficits among prematurely born children are paralleled by sustained alterations of brain development during childhood. Design and method: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging are conducted in children from the sample of the SNSF-study “Sleep, cognitive, and socio-emotional development in preterm children during middle and late childhood” at ages 8-12 years. Three subgroups will be assessed: children with extremely low BW (BW < 1000g), children with very low BW (BW = 1000g – 1499g), and age and gender matched healthy term born controls (BW = 3000g – 3999g). From the precursor study data on the children's sleep, cognitive and socio-emotional development is available. Research questions: 1) Do early preterm children differ from age and gender matched term born controls regarding structural brain development? 2) Do structural differences in brain development mediate differences in cognitive and socio-emotional development? 3) Are structural differences in brain development related with differences in sleep architecture and quantitative sleep-EEG indices in term and preterm children?
