Abstract |
The objective of this study is to identify and analyze business actors and initiatives that have promoted peacebuilding in Sri Lanka. This will entail a mapping exercise of the private sector as a whole, as well as specific data gathering on individuals, companies and associations from the business sector that have engaged in peace-related activities. The motivations and impediments of corporate engagement in peace promotion as well as the successes and failures of such initiatives will be outlined. Within the historical context of ethnic segregation between Tamils and Singhalese, it will be important to differentiate how businessmen of each group have been intentionally and unintentionally impacted by corporate activities. In order to provide a sound and critical study, literature on the role of businesses in political transitions, businesses in zones of conflict and the role of the private sector in peacebuilding, will be explored. An understanding of the history of conflict in Sri Lanka and current peace process will be essential to provide insight into how the private sector can be involved in reconciliation and reconstruction processes. |
