Social Housing and Spatial Justice – an analysis of poverty landscapes in globalizing Guangzhou
A GIS based visualization of spatial social structure in small scale communities and multi-level social housing neighborhoods in Guangzhou based on theories of spatial justice and social space
Abstract: Defining spatial justice issues in the Guangzhou social housing sector using GIS mapping & statistics; Analysis of poverty segregation – the increased isolation and clustering of poor people over the most recent years of high economic growth, visualization of spatial social structure, analyzing spatial positions and distributions of various types of social housing across neighborhoods in relation to demographic, economic, and policy variables.
Objective: This dissertation focuses on the geography in society and addresses issues of and reasons for living in the right or wrong place in a globalizing city. Specifically, the following questions are addressed: How does the social housing policy system (multi-level structure and allocation policies) affect the spatial structure of “poverty landscapes” in the globalizing City of Guangzhou? What interrelationships exist between the policy system and spatial social structure? In what way may housing policy contribute to spatial inequalities? While much research is being devoted to understanding how a city like Guangzhou can become a global city, this dissertation seeks to understand the emergence of poverty landscapes in a globalizing city, using a unique combination of statistical analysis of spatial social structures and innovations in visualization. Visualization of spatial social structure and analyzing spatial social structure data in the context of social housing policy will contribute to understanding how poverty landscapes emerge amidst economic growth and how one could change the emerging globalizing urban landscape of Chinese cities from one of chance and division to one of equality and opportunity.
