Abstract

This paper evaluates the question in which coordinate system the reported entrance and exit directions of the shadow were given in Babylonian eclipse records. It turns out that the angles were measurend in a simplified ecliptic coordinate system. For the determination of ecliptic position angles it is necessary to know the true northern point of the lunar or solar limb. A method using the distinctive features on the Moon is proposed for determing this true northern point.
