Abstract

Most of the neuromuscular diseases are not curable. The wasting of skeletal muscle (SkM) observed in these pathologies is debilitating and often irreversible. It compromises positive clinical outcomes, affects the quality of life and increased both morbidity and mortality. Identification of the physiological pathways that lead to human skeletal muscle breakdown is a critical step for the development of therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing or inhibiting muscle wasting. Providing strategies to slow down or block the dramatic muscle loss represents a realistic hope to improve quality of life and delay disease complication. Our project aims at developing a fast and powerful analysis of the signalling pathways responsible for the early induction of muscle breakdown. The collected data will be basis to develop therapeutic strategies to prevent disease-associated muscle weakness and should bring a better understanding of human muscle wasting.
