Abstract

The scientific core of the ADAMS project is characterized by a high-throughput genetic survey of three genetically complex diseases in ethnically different populations in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Russia, the latter representing three major ethnic groups (Bashkirs, Tatars and Russians). The study of genetic information in patients and healthy subjects from different countries around Europe, the apparent regulatory and legislative differences with respect to ethical procedures and the results of the ethical review of the grant application highlight the importance of a special focus on ethics within the ADAMS consortium. Therefore, this WP will be exclusively dedicated to ethics. Given the cultural diversity between the countries represented in the ADAMS consortium, it is possible that differences might exist with respect to the perception of the balance between benefit and burden of the performed research or that this balance is explained differently in the participating countries. Therefore, the identification of the relevant ethical bodies and the detailed comparison of the different regulatory and legislative rules will be central to the implementation of comparable ethical standards accepted by all ADAMS participants. The final goal of this WP will be the transposition of the regulatory environment in EU/AC countries and Russia and the creation of a Good Ethical Practice guide for this transfrontier cooperation. Given the fact that the level of scientific collaboration between EU/AC countries and Russia is constantly increasing, the need for adopting common rules becomes evident.
