Abstract |
Human health depends on a balanced functioning of immune defense mechanisms. This is especially true for T lymphocytes, one of the most important blood cells in the immune system. T lymphocytes play a critical role in protecting an individual from pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi in the environment. If someone has too few or poorly functioning T lymphocytes, they can develop serious infections. On the other hand, with overactive or poorly controlled T lymphocytes, one is at risk of developing an autoimmune disease, such as Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Arthritis and Systemic Lupus. In this respect, good health requires the right balance T lymphocyte activity. The current project aims to understand the molecular and cellular basis of T lymphocytes in health and disease. The research consortium will be collaborating to understand how T lymphocytes cause autoimmunity and control infections. |
