First Experiences and Clinical Results with a new Nanocrystalline Dispersion Ceramic in vivo
Third-party funded project
Project title First Experiences and Clinical Results with a new Nanocrystalline Dispersion Ceramic in vivo
Principal Investigator(s) Hintermann, Beat
Organisation / Research unit Bereich Operative Fächer (Klinik) / Bewegungsapparat und Integument
Project start 01.01.2008
Probable end 31.12.2009
Status Completed
Abstract In a prospective multicenter study, started in december 2007, we followed all primary hip arthroplasties operated with a new Alumina Toughened Zirconia (ATZ) ceramic made out of a homogenous dispersion of nanocrystalline Alumina and Zirconia. In vitro tests showed the highest mechanical strength and the highest resistance against surface roughening under edged load conditions of any Aluminium-Zirconia dispersion ceramic. It is hypothesized that the new ceramic has a lower incidence of squeaking noise and fracture as compared to pure Alumina or standar Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) ceramic due to better mechanical properties.
