Abstract

This project addresses the interaction of documentary media and religion using a theoretical approach that links the study of religion and the study of media in light of communication theory. By analysing the construction of religion in documentary audio-visual media, the project focuses on Mormonism (principally The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [LDS]), its worldwide religious communities, and splinter groups. Three fundamental issues frame its content: (1) the effect of documentary media on the perceptions of religion (How do documentary media influence representations, public perception, and opinions about Mormonism?); (2) the effect of media on religious communities and traditions (How do Mormon organisations adapt their religious world view in light of documentary media?); and (3) the interaction of economics, religion, and media (How does Mormonism, an economically successful religious grouping, benefit from the logic of documentary media?) The project grapples both theoretically and methodologically with the approach to religion found in documentary media. A social scientific methodology that embraces quantitative audience study, qualitative interviews, and participatory observation is combined with hermeneutic analysis of media sources in their contexts, addressing Mormon worldviews, practices, rituals, and narrations. Located within the study of religion, the project throws light on the construction of religion in audio-visual documentary media -in this instance specifically, by and for Mormon communities and individuals - by taking account of media production, representation, and distribution and reception processes in which members and non-members actively participate, and in which a diversity of Internet platforms play a crucial role.
