Abstract |
Love, says Martin Buber, is not about each partner having the other as his or her object. Love is between the partners. It is dialogical. Love is neither fusion nor care. Lovers share what is important in their emotional and practical lives. The book project develops the dialogical model of love. It draws on two main sources: first, phenomenological studies of love from the beginning of the last century, especially by Max Scheler Martin Buber, and second, the late novels of the English-American author Henry James. When Henry James writes of two lovers, “he found their word”, or “she could enter into his picture”, he shows how lovers together build their world, how they together build their lives. Jamesian love is dialogical. |
