Abstract |
Microfinance, i.e. microcredit, micro savings and microinsurance is regarded as an important tool to reduce risk, poverty and vulnerability. Whereas microfinance started in the form of microcredit in the 1970s, microinsurance is rather novel, but holds a high potential. This study is based on a survey conducted in Gujarat, India. The survey comprised 256 Afat Vimo insured households and microenterprises and 86 non-insured. Afat Vimo is the microinsurance scheme of an Indian non-governmental organization and covers damage and loss of property in cases of 19 natural and man-made disasters, life and accident. The main objective is to find out about benefits and limitations of such schemes for the micro insured. The study also targets in providing information from the non-insured about their attitude, their needs and their willingness to pay for microinsurance. It is of high importance to comprise the structure of needs from the stakeholders in order to optimize their benefits and hence increase the number of insured, which ultimately leads to poverty reduction and an increase of social security. On the provider side the results from the study help to adapt and modify the offered products according to the needs of the target group and to improve the management of such schemes. In more general terms, the study will have implications for the role of microinsurance in other regional, cultural and disaster contexts.
