Abstract

Sophora japonica is a major herbal drug in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). One of its main uses is to treat diabetes. We confirmed the antidiabetic properties of metahnolic extracts of Sophora roots in vitro and in vivo. Compounds responsible for the antidiabetic properties have been identified, and they currently undergo pharmacological characterization in vitro and in vivo.

The aim of the project is to provide a scientific rationale for the traditional use, and to explore possible synergistic effects of extract constituents. Isolated compounds may serve as entry points for new antidiabatic drugs.
